9x18mm Makarov Ammo
The Makarov PM is an affordable handgun that fires 9x18mm Makarov ammo. The 9mm Makarov, or "mak" as some call it, is the Soviet/Russian answer to the 9mm Luger. It was developed in the late 1940s and replaced the 7.62 Tokarev in the Soviet military for use in sidearms.
9mm Makarov ammunition fires a light bullet weighing about 95 grains at a muzzle velocity of 1,000 to 1,100 feet per second. In terms of recoil and power, this caliber occupies a middle ground between the .380 ACP and the 9mm Parabellum. Since this is a "fighting" cartridge, most ammo available consists of either inexpensive FMJ loads or jacketed hollow points.
Most 9mm Makarov ammo is made in Eastern Europe using reliable but non-reloadable steel cases. This ammo is what the Makarov PM was designed to use, although it may not be allowed at some indoor ranges. Brass-cased alternatives from PPU, Sellier & Bellot, and Winchester offer an alternative for reloaders and indoor shooters.
